Hi guys, I had an opinion question. I am really trying to make a living from poker, but have been

having trouble finding "my game". I tried cash, up down up down then completely broke. I tried

sit&gos, but slow money. How do you feel about this? Are cash games better or sit&go's??

Thanks people,
Best Regards!

In the long run both are "Slow Money".

Long run Poker is a game of percentages and odds. Cash or RIng (FLHE) game earnings should run you about 2 BB per 100 if you are a slightly above average player. STTs (Single Table Sit and Go Tournaments) should give you about a 30% ITM rate if you are an above average player. Yes you can go on rushes and do much better but even the best players in the world only improve those stats by a fraction of a percent over 10,000 to one 100,000 hands played.

The whole key to maximizing your poker play is to improve as a player until you can hold those types of stats at your particular buy in. Then move up in stakes until you get to a comfortable level of earnings for your time invested. While there are loads of other variables to consider like table selection, bonus chasing, time of day, VIP%, etc the most important thing you need to consider is Bank Roll management which is a whole series of threads in and of themselves.

Last thing. In live poker it could take you a year to get 10,000 hands dealt. In 2005 my best year every as a $1/2 FLHE Bonus Chaser on Interpoker and the Crypto Network I multi-Tabled almost 300,000 hands of online poker. While I earned $18,000 it was way below what I should have made for a number of reasons. My point though is that the time went very fast and I could not believe the numbers when I looked at the yearly totals on Poker Tracker.

yeah you're right about that... it's all about bankroll management really. But I noticed that with sitngoes it's really hard to lose that much in any particular day, especially if you stick with like 3 or 4 games per day, you can lose 40 bucks max.. where as in cash game you can lost $200 on just a single pocket aces! but i guess if you're only trying to make about $600 a month, then 10$ sitandgoes should do, given that you get in the money %90 of the time. but yeah.. thanks for hte advice =)

You are welcome. I would love to find a site so juicy I could cash in 90% of my SSTs.

Hi,
I am a stupid bot that cannot even read the content of a thread before I reply to open posts on the internet. Please ignore me since I have gotten a lifetime ban hammer for spamming.

From my understanding from reading Poker forums, those who actually make a living at poker do so with large swings in their bankroll: They may be up a few grand one day then down a few grand the next. That swing from "up to down" is something few are able to manage without stressing out totally over.
Good luck at it

Most winning players call it variance.

Hi,Am off a holiday to Africa later this year covering most of the eastern and southern African countries. Have worked out roughly how much spending etc money I need but now have trouble deciding on the best way to take it. All cash or a mix of cash and credit card. Do not particularly want to be walking around with large amounts of cash strapped to my body Any advice/experiences gratefully appreciated.Thanks,Sally.

It is been my experience that tournaments are the way to go. In the long run you can make lots more money in the tournaments.

I owe 11,000 on my car. I have a paid off whole life policy that I can cash out for 7,500. Nobody depends on my income. Is there any reason to keep the life insurance, or should I take the money and apply it to my car? Id love to be debt free.

Cash tables are best. You could spend 2 hours playing at a cash table and make a good profit. Or you could spend 2-4 hours playing a tournament that you finish in the bottom money or lose.

I don't see why you couldn't do both. There have been a few times where I have been layed off or lost my source of income and relied on poker to sustain myself. I never really considered myself a professional gambler but I have always worked to be a winning poker player since it was something I enjoyed. I think that if you are going to be playing poker for a living or would like to that you should definitely not dive into it just hoping your going to become a winning player over night at whatever you choose.

You should keep your day job and spend your extra time playing poker and make notes at whatever it is that's causing you to lose. Record your hand histories from online poker and go over them.

Surround yourself with other people that are winning poker players and discuss certain strategies. I know full tilt has a great online training program that's free for anyone that has a real money account with them to use.

The bottom line is that if it's something you really want to do if you keep at it a good mind set and are always taking steps to make yourself better it won't matter what games they are you should eventually be able to beat them. Just keep working hard and eventually you'll get your break.
