View Full Version : the cherry atop a bad week

OK, so I've been having a really bad week. I've only cashed 3 times (playing 4-5 tourneys per day). Every time I get a set, someone calls all in with a flush or straight draw and hits. Every time I get kings, someone has aces. Every time I have aces, someone calls and cracks em.
Today, though, it looked like things might be turning around. Although I didn't cash in the two earlier tourneys I played, it was only because I lost big coinflips at critical times.
Then, in the midnight $700 guaranteed, I was doing really good. To my left sat megadonk (mikedamaster). He was the definition of (badly playing) LAG. Calling with anything. Reraising with ace 7 off suit. He was putting in his money with most anything, and got a big stack by sucking out a few big hands. I was about even with him in chips and just waiting for the right spot to double my stack. I didn't have to wait long, because along came my opportunity:

It was just harsh.
Maybe tomorrow will be a better day.

That is CarbonPoker for ya. Plenty of gamblers there. Hang tough. Things will even out over time.

OK, so the days following the last post weren't any better. In fact, they were much, much, worse.
In the $2500 guaranteed yesterday, I started at an extremely loose table, so I was playing ultra tight. I'd only played two hands prior to the hand below. Despite my extremely tight play, when I raised under the gun with KK, I got four callers. The flop came 7 3 2 and I figured that even at this table, there was no way someone could have flopped two pair. I knew that if anyone had anything between jack 7 and ace 7 they'd either go all in or call all in. I bet out and get raised, exactly as I'd wanted. I reraised and was immediately reraised all in. I call and the guy has 22. The river comes another 2 just to rub it in.

A few hands later, I get ace 9 off and decide to go for it. A guy calls me with ace 9 off and hits a flush.

"Oh well," I figured. "This rotten luck can't possibly continue any longer." At least I hoped it couldn't continue any longer, since today was the Aussie Millions grand final. I won a grand final coupon in a satellite a while back and had been waiting to use it.
In this tournament, there were 100 entrants. First place got a trip to the Aussie Millions and 2nd through 38th got their money back. So, my plan was to only play monsters until I'm in the top 38, then mix it up a bit to try to take first. The third hand of the tournament I get pocket fours in the big blind. Somebody raises in early position and gets a few callers. I call the small raise, figuring that if I flopped a set, I'd pick up some chips and greatly increase my chances of hitting that top 38. Well, I did flop a set and bet out with it, getting one caller. There were two spades on the board, so I didn't want to give anyone a free shot at hitting a flush. The turn comes the jack of hearts. I bet out again and get raised. I figure the guy is trying to make a move to take down the pot or hit the jack and thinks he has the best hand. Either way, I didn't want to give the guy a free shot at a flush if he had the draw, so I reraised. He pushed all in and I call to find out he'd flopped a higher set.

So yea, bad beat after bad beat has cost me $1000 this week.

All I can say is that site is full of bingo players. If it makes you feel any better, three weeks in a row my top boat has fallen to river quads in the $20K on sunday. It is best to remember that most of the players in these have won satellite seats and only know how to "Gamble it up". Hang tough, eventually it will all come together for you.

OK, so it was starting to come together for me in the $2500 guaranteed today. I had a pretty decent stack until this hand:

After this hand, I had some ground to make up. I raised preflop with KQ suited and tried to steal the pot after missing the flop, but got called by pocket 3s and knocked out.

Dan,
That was a great session you played earlier today. I loved the way you played that set of Jacks. Me on the other hand,,,,, yep I am a limit player by trade so NL cash games are all in or fold for me until I can get a read on the table. Eventually on one of my other 5 tables I did stack the old gunslinger for far more than he took with that AA vs my KK.
I like the way you chat up the table. Gets em all buddy buddy. Me I get all Helmuthy especially in tournaments.

It continues in the $1500 guaranteed:
After having my kings run in to aces and having my aces cracked by jack 10, I sat tight and waited for a spot to double up and get back in it. I've played deadmoneyking before, and had his play tagged. At this stage in a tournament, he pushes with weak aces and just raises with strong aces. Since he pushed, I knew my ace jack was good. That is, until the flop:

The very next hand:

Over an hour of playing good just to get knocked out by two bad beats in a row.

So I start the day off in my first tournament. I hit my first ROYAL FLUSH. I was so happy.
Then since 10am Ive had 5 bad beats that have ruined that wonderful event.
3 - 2 outers on the river
2 - 1 outers on the river
Talk about variance kicking me in the ars Lets get real I hit the ROYAL because I am a good person and Karma rewarded me, then GOD reminded me that I spend too much time playing poker and spend WAY too much money on it.
